Method of using two very different items to extend a word’s scope of a word, showing agreement to illustrate a point, or to correspond as an analogy in details between these two very different items. Metaphors do not employ the words ‘like’ or ‘as’, as do similes. Instead, metaphors have no comparison at all, only a direct reference. Examples are: cash cow, escalator clause , high flyer, lame duck, and spinoff.
