Ordinary shares of various types of stocks are bought and sold in a central trading place, called a securities market. In the US there are several of such markets, collectively called The US equities market . The American Stock Exchange (AMEX), NASDAQ National Market, and New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) are examples of the larger recognized national and international securities markets.
